Hargrave taught middle school language arts. She knew the math. The superintendent was already making $110,000. That raise alone equaled a full teacher's salary, or two cafeteria workers, or two janitors. She stood during public comment and said what needed saying: "We work very hard with very little to maintain the salaries that we have. We're meeting those goals, while someone in that position of leadership is getting a raise? It's a sad, sad day to be a teacher in Vermilion Parish."

But moments later, the marshal arrested her, handcuffing her and forcibly removing her from the building. The charge: resisting an officer. The irony: school officials later said they wouldn't even press charges.

Hargrave's willingness to speak up, combined with the public attention that followed, created consequences for those in power. By late 2018, a court invalidated the superintendent's contract. In 2019, the school board voted to remove him. He eventually resigned, and a settlement was reached on the pay raise case itself.
