Nina Bakhshizadeh thought she was heading to Mexico for a birthday celebration. Instead, she found herself clinging to life after an ATV accident sent her tumbling off a bridge, breaking her neck and nearly ending everything.
Twenty-eight agonizing hours after the fall, Nina underwent emergency spine surgery. She describes it as the most painful experience of her life. Doctors managed to save her lower back, and she can now move her legs — a small victory in a very long fight. She's holding onto hope that with intense physical therapy, she'll walk normally again.

Now, here's where things get truly complicated: no travel insurance. The park's insurance? Didn't cover the surgery. So, while Nina was fighting for her life, her family and friends launched a frantic campaign to cover the life-saving operation. In a matter of days, they pulled together over $50,000. Because apparently that's what it takes to survive a birthday party gone very, very wrong.

Nina's journey is far from over. She's still dealing with untreated neck fractures, a mountain of medical bills, and the prospect of endless physical therapy. Walking normally or returning to work simply isn't an option right now. She’s currently “stuck in Mexico hoping to feel better enough to get on a plane,” which is a rather understated way to describe being stranded after breaking your neck.
Despite everything, Nina is profoundly grateful to be alive and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. She feels confident she'll walk again, buoyed by what she calls love and prayers from around the world. It’s a stark reminder that sometimes, the best insurance policy isn't a piece of paper, but the people who show up when everything else falls apart.
