Officers Benjamin Haines and Gabriel Chiarelli of the Woodstown Police Department weren't expecting to become midwives that afternoon. When a man rushed into the station and led them to a car in the parking lot, they found a woman in active labor—and no shared language between them.
The woman spoke no English. The officers had no delivery training. What they had was their phones.
Thinking quickly, Haines and Chiarelli opened Google Translate and began typing instructions. "We really couldn't say much, but I just told her to breathe and push, and she did and out came the head," Haines recalled. A few more contractions, some blankets from the station, and a newborn girl was safely wrapped and waiting for the paramedics who arrived moments later.
