Shedly Appolon was eight months pregnant when dizziness hit her on I-95 in Martin County, Florida. Her car drifted off the highway and into a pond. Within seconds, both the driver's side and passenger doors were underwater. Water crept across the floor of the car as she sat trapped, panic rising.
"I tried to open my driver's side door and my passenger door, but they were both submerged in water, so I couldn't get out," Appolon said. "I started feeling water on my feet. So, I started to panic a little."
Logan Hayes was nearby when it happened. He didn't hesitate. He stripped off his extra layers, ran toward the pond, and dove in. The back door was still above water — barely. Hayes reached it, pulled it open, and got Appolon out before the car sank further.

Paramedics arrived within minutes and took her to the hospital. The trauma of nearly drowning while pregnant triggered an emergency C-section. Her daughter, Ivory, was born seven weeks early, weighing 3 pounds 14 ounces. Appolon calls her a "miracle baby."
Hayes, asked later about the rescue, simply said he was grateful to be in the right place at the right time. For Appolon and her fiancé, who arrived at the hospital to meet his newborn daughter, there was no question: a stranger had just saved two lives.
