Ru Somaweera, a behavioral ecologist from Murdoch University, explained that researchers don't fully understand how this behavior works for crocodiles that have been in captivity for a long time before being released.

The study took place in Bangladesh's Sundarbans mangrove forest. This area is one of the last places where saltwater crocodiles live in the country. Hunting for crocodile skins severely reduced their numbers until the 1970s. Even with legal protection since 1973, the population has not recovered much.

Today, only about 140 mature saltwater crocodiles are estimated to live in the Sundarbans. If captive-bred crocodiles return to their enclosures after release, reintroduction efforts will fail.

Researchers Tagging a Crocodile

Traditionally, reintroduction programs use hatchlings. However, their survival rates are very low, and they take a long time to mature. Understanding if larger, captive-bred crocodiles can be used instead is an important question.

Tracking Crocodiles in the Wild

Researchers attached satellite trackers to five adult saltwater crocodiles. This group included three captive-reared females that had lived in captivity for 8 to 22 years. It also included one wild crocodile caught and released locally, and another wild crocodile moved far from its original capture site. The crocodiles were watched for several months.

Somaweera noted that none of the captive-reared crocodiles tried to go back to the breeding facility. This was the most encouraging finding.

Instead, they settled into small areas and moved similarly to the local wild crocodile. This suggests they can adapt well to new environments.

However, the results were different for a wild crocodile named Jongra. He was moved about 132 kilometers from his home before being released. Jongra did not reach his original capture site during the study. But his movements clearly showed he was heading in that direction. He traveled much farther each day than other crocodiles and covered a very large area. He even moved over 30 kilometers in a single day, which are all signs of homing behavior.

Future Conservation Efforts

Somaweera believes these findings can help guide future conservation efforts. Releasing subadult and adult captive-reared crocodiles could be a good way to boost wild populations. For wild crocodiles that are moved, careful planning is needed to manage their strong desire to return home.
