Engineers off Long Island had one job: anchor those giant Empire Wind 1 turbines to the Atlantic seabed. Mission accomplished. But then, something delightfully unexpected happened. Those foundations, designed purely for stability, started moonlighting as prime real estate for marine life.
Turns out, if you build it, they will come. And by "it," we mean a colossal steel pole surrounded by rocks. By "they," we mean entire underwater ecosystems.

From Bare Sand to Bustling Reef
Take Taiwan's Formosa Wind Farm. Since 2017, 69 turbines have been spinning away in similarly sandy waters. A recent study there found 86 types of reef fish chilling within 165 feet of the turbine bases. The sandy bits around them? Crickets. Or, you know, no fish.

Because apparently, even mussels and barnacles are tired of their homes eroding out from under them. Offshore wind foundations offer the kind of stable, solid surface that the ocean's more sedentary residents crave.
Once the foundational creatures – the sponges, the anemones, the mussels – set up shop, the whole food chain shows up for the party. Crabs move in, small fish follow, and then the bigger predators swing by for dinner. Emmanuel Oyewole, a researcher from the University of Rhode Island, rather charmingly calls these turbine bases "mini ecosystems." The big question now: are they actually creating new life, or just acting like a fancy new restaurant that pulls customers from other eateries?

If these wind farms are simultaneously generating clean energy and spawning new marine life, that's a two-for-one deal humanity could really use. If they're just rerouting fish, well, that's still interesting, but maybe less of a mic drop moment.
What the US is Seeing
Over on the Block Island Wind Farm, the US's inaugural offshore project, blue mussels were practically throwing housewarming parties around the foundations within four years. Surveys found fish populations thriving within 400 to 500 feet, mirroring Taiwan's findings. The effect is real, if a little localized.
New York's Empire Wind 1 foundations just got installed in 2025, with power expected by late 2026. If marine communities take hold at the same pace as in Taiwan, they're just getting started on their accidental architectural marvels. Ongoing work at the South Fork and Revolution Wind sites is already pulling in Jonah crab samples, and while it's early days, the clues are looking promising.

Taiwan's data, after eight years, also shows that these new turbine-reefs aren't just copy-pasting existing reef communities. They're unique. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying. Will they evolve to be more like existing reefs, or will they stay their own quirky, turbine-adjacent thing? Only time, and a lot more underwater cameras, will tell.
Ultimately, whether New York's turbines become the next great underwater metropolis depends on local conditions – the original species around, the seafloor's mood, water depth, and how long the steel poles have been standing there, stoically hosting barnacle discos. Eight years of data from Taiwan gives us a fantastic sneak peek, but the ocean, as always, reserves the right to surprise us. And apparently, to build some pretty sweet accidental habitats.
