Sceye, a company out of Moriarty, New Mexico, just pulled off a genuinely wild feat with its High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) vehicle, aptly named Service Test 1 (ST1). This stratospheric marvel launched on August 9, 2026, and thirteen days later, it was chilling over Japan, beaming mobile broadband straight to regular phones.

ST1 wasn't just sight-seeing. It partnered with SoftBank Corp. to provide internet, communicate with drones, and generally flex its high-altitude muscles, all while developing a fancy 3D communications network.

Sceye's CEO, Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen, called the mission "groundbreaking and historic." Which, when you consider the thing flew halfway across the world, then came back, providing internet the whole time, seems like an understatement. He's betting the stratosphere is the next big thing for infrastructure, paving the way for an "always-on" future and even 6G.
Think of it as a "cell tower in the sky." One Sceye HAPS unit can cover an area equivalent to about 500 ground-based cell towers. Let that satisfying number sink in.

It's like a satellite, but better. Satellites are way up there, expensive, and a pain to launch. These HAPS vehicles are 1,800 times closer to Earth, much cheaper, and can stay aloft day and night. During its month-long journey, ST1 also handled emergency calls and drone comms, just to prove it could.
And for the truly tech-curious, Sceye and SoftBank even installed a server directly on the platform. This meant data processing happened onboard, cutting communication delays by over 40% compared to traditional cloud processing. The data went straight from your phone, up to the HAPS, got processed, and came back down. No detours. Just a very, very high-tech handshake.
ST1 returned to Sceye's headquarters in New Mexico on September 5, 2026, having proven that the future of your internet might just be floating thousands of feet above your head. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying.
