Back in 2022, a group of high schoolers in California crafted 150 LEGO-style airplane kits. Since that first shipment, Student Makers has sent over a 3D printer, an Arduino kit, and more than 400 curriculum slides. They’ve even provided 60 hours of live teacher training and worked with over 30 students directly. The results? One team of four students built an autonomous agriculture rover that snagged third place at the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair. Jacob, a ninth-grader from that team, now leads the school’s robotics team and has his sights set on becoming a rocket engineer for NASA. Because of course he does.

Ruth Agongo, a teacher at Kenya Relief Academy, summed it up perfectly: “You are a game-changer. Whatever you have taught us, we are putting into action because the kids are really excited by the technology.”

The Global Classroom

Since 2023, the reach has expanded. Student Makers instructors have been teaching live 3D-printing classes via video call to students at Dr. R. V. Shah English Medium School in rural Gujarat, India. This school, with over 350 students, also received a donated 3D printer, and more than 25 secondary students have already completed the program. The workshops in the U.S. follow the same “Learn, Make, Showcase, Serve” model, ensuring that the knowledge keeps flowing and multiplying.

To date, six rounds of 3D printing workshops have reached over 70 students in the U.S. Three rounds of Python and data science have yielded 12 projects and a staggering 1,200+ lines of code. All taught by their peers.

Student Makers is part of the Youth Technology Corps Global Alliance, which has been connecting schools across eight countries since 1998. Their next move? Working with three underserved schools near Mexico City. Oh, and helping those Kenya Relief Academy students use their donated 3D printer to make medical-grade face shields for the school’s clinic. Because apparently, giving kids the tools to build their own future isn't enough; they need to be able to build their own PPE, too.
