In March, a New Yorker known as "Mr. Spencer" had a final wish from his hospital bed. He was terminally ill and wanted his two German shepherds to find a loving home.

NYC Second Chance Rescue, a local nonprofit, took in his dogs, Bowie and Nikki. This happened soon after Mr. Spencer went into the hospital.

A Heartfelt Goodbye

The rescue group made sure Mr. Spencer could say goodbye to his dogs. They brought Bowie and Nikki to his hospital room for an emotional visit.

"It was a tearjerker, seeing them get so excited to see their owner," said Jennifer Brooks, founder of NYC Second Chance Rescue. She told WCBS that the dogs lay near his bed for a long time.

For months, Bowie and Nikki stayed together in a kennel at the rescue. Nikki was friendly with other dogs. However, Bowie needed a home without other pets. This made it hard to adopt them out as a pair.

Finding Forever Homes

Every month, NYC Second Chance Rescue shared updates about the dogs. They reminded people that Bowie and Nikki were looking for homes.

"Nikki is 10. Bowie is 4," the rescue wrote on Instagram. "Both are incredibly well-trained, people friendly, well-mannered, and deeply loving dogs." They described the dogs as calm, loyal, and devoted companions.

Bowie found his forever home in July. He was featured on the rescue's "Second Chance Spotlight" on Instagram.

"Bowie found his forever home last weekend," his new owner, Wendy, commented. She shared updates on his journey on the social media account @bowie_thegsd.

NYC Second Chance Rescue described Nikki as a beautiful German Shepherd with a gentle soul. They noted her kind eyes show loyalty and love. Nikki enjoys human connection and thrives in a caring environment. She has a calm and friendly nature.

"If you’re ready to open your heart to a truly special dog, Nikki is ready to return that love tenfold," the rescue wrote.
