This isn't just a fluke. The country is now on track to add 71 gigawatt-hours by year's end, a 20% jump from last year. The reasons are pretty straightforward: batteries are getting cheaper, and we're suddenly adding a lot more solar and wind to the grid, which, like a perpetually hungry teenager, needs a place to stash its snacks.

The Big Guns Are Leading The Charge
Most of this monumental growth comes from the kind of projects that make you say, "Whoa, that's a lot of batteries." We're talking utility-scale systems, the kind that don't fit in your garage. Seven new gigascale battery installations, each over one gigawatt-hour, came online in a single quarter. Shan Tomouk, an energy storage lead for Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, put it simply: a few behemoths really moved the needle.

Data centers, those digital brain trusts, snapped up about three-quarters of the new commercial batteries. Because apparently that’s where we are now: your TikTok feed needs a backup generator.
But for home batteries, the kind that keep your lights on during a blackout or store your rooftop solar, things slowed down. Sharply. They're projected to drop 16% this year. The culprit? A federal tax credit for home systems decided to pack its bags and leave in 2025. Tomouk expects a rebound, but not until the end of the decade. Meanwhile, tax credits for the big industrial batteries are mostly still in play. Isshu Kikuma, an energy storage analyst, called batteries "a bright spot" in the energy sector. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying.

As the battery market flexes its muscles, there’s a growing clamor for US-made tech. Right now, most systems still rely on cells crafted in China, even if they're assembled stateside. Tariffs are already nudging domestic production, and starting this year, energy storage tax credits are throwing up guardrails against too many imported Chinese batteries.
While new manufacturing plants are popping up like mushrooms after a rain, they might not catch up to demand until around 2030. Until then, get ready for potentially higher prices. Because nothing says progress like a little supply chain drama.
