Volkswagen has not released many details yet. The Tukan is expected to have a mild-hybrid 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. Flex-fuel options will also be available.
The Tukan is designed to be a workhorse that is also fun to drive. It will come in single and double cab versions with multiple trim levels. These include the basic Robust and the top-end Extreme.
The Tukan features new LED headlights, similar to those on the European Tiguan SUV. These are mounted above black air intakes, giving it an aggressive front end. The truck also has rugged styling with muscular fenders, prominent wheel arches, door cladding, and squarish tail lamps. The tailgate blends into the bumper.
Volkswagen designed the Tukan based on customer feedback. This includes a simpler look for the single cab version. The company tested the model for over 1.2 million miles (2 million km). This ensures its durability in tough conditions, from engine performance to climate control in hot weather.
The Tukan will arrive in dealerships in the first half of 2027. It will likely replace the basic Saveiro in some markets. The Saveiro is a compact truck with a 1.6-liter engine producing 101 hp. The Tukan will compete with popular models in Brazil like the Fiat Strada and Chevrolet Montana.
A Growing Market for Smaller Trucks
The American market is showing interest in smaller, more affordable vehicles. The Wall Street Journal recently noted that the domestic compact pickup segment is small but growing quickly.
In about a year, several electric pickup options will be available. These include the Slate truck, Telo MT1, and Ford Fathom, along with Ram's Rampage. For gasoline engines, popular choices include the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
Volkswagen America's CEO stated in April that the company is considering bringing a pickup to the US. This could be a large body-on-frame truck like the Amarok, or a compact unibody model. The Tukan could fit this role if its price is right.
