Well, this is one way to keep the ego in check. France, one of the undisputed titans of international soccer, just took a 2-1 loss against Ivory Coast in a World Cup warm-up. And their take? "Totally fine, actually. Needed that."
Manchester United's Amad Diallo delivered the winning blow, which, let's be honest, probably felt a little extra satisfying for the Elephants of Ivory Coast. France had even managed to score first with Rayan Cherki, because of course they did. But the second half saw Ivory Coast roar back in Nantes, securing their victory with goals from Guela Doue and Diallo.
Now, France isn't exactly panicking. Their World Cup journey kicks off against Senegal in New York on June 16, and midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni basically shrugged off the defeat. "It's a shame to lose, but we are preparing," he said, adding that confidence remains high. "There's no big lesson from this game, even if we had won."

Start Your News DetoxWhich, if you think about it, is a pretty zen approach to a loss. But then again, this wasn't exactly France's A-team. Many of their Paris Saint-Germain stars were still recovering from a Champions League final win (tough life, we know), and the coach, Didier Deschamps, shuffled the lineup significantly at halftime.
Defender Lucas Hernandez echoed the sentiment, noting the many substitutions. "We are in good spirits," he confirmed. Deschamps himself admitted the team lost control after a strong first half, but also saw the silver lining: a much-needed dose of humility.
"Losing is never nice," Deschamps conceded, "but it's a reminder, if we needed one, not to think we are better than we are." Cherki, who scored France's lone goal, put an even finer point on it: "It's a small warning. We are not going to the World Cup thinking we are favorites and will easily beat everyone."
So, there you have it. A loss that was apparently a win for self-awareness. Because nothing says "we're still the best" quite like losing to prove you're not too full of yourselves.
