Before you get a chance to see it, the Bayeux Tapestry is already making the rounds with some rather exclusive company. King Charles, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently gathered for a private viewing of the nearly 70-meter-long embroidered cloth at the British Museum in London. Because apparently, even centuries-old historical artifacts need a VIP rollout.
King Charles, ever the diplomat, pointed out that the tapestry "tells the story of the beginning of what I like to think of as the French side of my family’s history." Which, if you trace it back to William, Duke of Normandy, who famously won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, is a pretty solid claim. He then pivoted to the tapestry as a symbol of not just a shared past, but a shared future. All very kumbaya, considering the whole thing depicts an invasion.
The Ultimate Loaner Program
This particular loan has been in the works for a casual 96 years, with the first request for the tapestry to visit the UK dating back to 1930. President Macron finally sealed the deal during a state visit in July 2025, framing the exhibition as a testament to Anglo-French unity. Because nothing says 'friendship' quite like borrowing a national treasure that depicts your ancestors conquering someone else's.
