Happiness is more than just a feeling. It can be found in certain cities across the U.S., according to new research. Some places are full of good energy, with strong communities that support healthy living and satisfying jobs. Other cities leave people wanting more joy. In 2026, finding a place that truly makes you happy is more important than ever, given the pressures of work, money, and daily life.

WalletHub studied cities nationwide to see where smiles are common and where they are not. The study looked at specific factors that lead to happiness, like depression rates, work hours, and weather. This research shows how happiness is spread across the U.S. in 2026.

The Science Behind Smiles

Not all cities are equally good at making people happy. Researchers looked at 182 U.S. cities to find where Americans are doing well and where they are just getting by.

Three main areas were considered. The first is emotional and physical well-being. This includes how satisfied people are with their lives, their mental and physical health, sleep, exercise, life expectancy, and food security. Cities with healthier, less stressed residents scored higher.

Another key factor is income and employment. This covers job satisfaction, job security, income, unemployment rates, weekly work hours, and commute times. Cities with meaningful work and stable finances ranked well.

Finally, community and environment were measured. This includes social connections, safety, parks, free time, and weather. These factors shape how connected and proud residents feel in their neighborhoods.

By combining 29 different measures, WalletHub created overall happiness scores for cities across the U.S.

The Happiest Cities

Does money buy happiness? In Fremont, California, the happiest city for seven years, high household incomes play a role. Nearly 80% of residents earn $75,000 or more. But it's not just about money. Sunny weather, active lifestyles, and strong social connections also boost emotional and physical well-being. The city also has the lowest divorce rate in the nation, low depression, and is known as a caring city. This shows that when neighbors support each other, happiness grows.

Bismarck, North Dakota, is the second-happiest city. This is due to a mix of wellness, community, and leisure. Residents report excellent health, plenty of sleep, and more free time than anywhere else in the country. Strong social ties, safety, and community pride help Bismarck rank high on the happiness scale.

Scottsdale, Arizona, is the third-happiest city. Residents here have good physical and mental health, along with strong financial stability. Nearly 90% take part in sports. Almost two-thirds of households earn over $75,000 each year, which is an income level linked to high happiness. Low poverty, many outdoor activities, and a supportive community make Scottsdale a place where people naturally smile.

Health Is Wealth

What makes people happy often comes down to their physical and mental health. The top-ranked cities consistently do well in life expectancy, exercise, and overall wellness. When you add access to parks and lots of free time, it's clear why "health is wealth" is still true. A good income also helps.

In Fremont, residents report the fewest adults having 14 or more mentally unhealthy days per month. In Scottsdale, nearly 88% of adults say they have good or better health. These numbers show how staying healthy—in body, mind, and community—leads to happiness.

If you want to boost your mood, cities like Fremont and Scottsdale might be good places to consider. But focusing on the habits and factors that make these cities thrive, like prioritizing both health and wealth, is an even smarter first step.
