Some songs are much more popular than others, and you might already have your fill of a few by now. But the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, is laughing all the way to the bank.
Her 1994 hit, All I Want for Christmas, remains in heavy rotation year after year. Because it’s been so popular, Mariah continues to bring in huge royalties. All I Want for Christmas is everywhere during the holidays. The Independent reported that, according to Forbes and The Economist, the song has been earning Mariah between $2.5 and $3 million per year. And since its release in 1994, it has brought her between $65 and $75 million.
That’s truly incredible and speaks to how beloved her song truly is. Mariah shared the story of All I Want for Christmas in a 2023 interview with ABC News. “I was working on it by myself … on this little Casio keyboard and writing down words and thinking about, ‘What do I think of at Christmas? What do I love?
What do I want? What do I dream of?'” Mariah said. “And that’s what started it.” Mariah Carey explained that she was mindful of the era when writing All I Want for Christmas. She didn’t want the song to sound stuck in time.
“My goal was to do something timeless, so it didn’t feel like the ’90s, which is when I wrote it,” she said. Mission accomplished.
