Apparently, the future isn't just coming; it's getting a master's degree. UC Berkeley just announced a brand-new professional graduate program in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, set to kick off in Fall 2027. So, if you're a STEM grad looking to dive headfirst into the algorithms that will inevitably run our lives, mark your calendar: applications open September 24, 2026.
This isn't some online, learn-at-your-own-pace kind of deal. The Master of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (MAIML) is a full-throttle, in-person, two-semester sprint on the Berkeley campus. Students will be steeped in the computational and statistical dark arts of machine learning and AI, learning not just how to build these systems, but how to actually understand them and, crucially, use them responsibly. Because apparently that's where we are now: teaching future AI engineers to be good digital citizens.
The program is a brainchild of UC Berkeley's College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), with faculty from Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) and Statistics departments doing the heavy lifting on design and instruction. So, you know, the people who actually know what they're talking about.

The curriculum reads like a greatest hits album for anyone serious about AI: core courses in data science, machine learning, probability, statistical inference, and, naturally, AI ethics. Because someone has to make sure Skynet doesn't go rogue on day one. Plus, there are specialized electives for those who want to really niche down.
And for a touch of real-world flair, students get a "Silicon Valley immersion experience" between semesters. Because what's a cutting-edge tech degree without a field trip to the epicenter of innovation (and venture capital)? To cap it all off, you'll need to pass a comprehensive exam. Just to prove you actually learned something beyond how to fine-tune a neural network.
Jennifer Chayes, CDSS dean, put it rather succinctly: this degree is a "unique chance" to get some serious AI training. And her graduates? They'll be the ones "shaping the future by creating new technologies." Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying. Just another Tuesday in the age of AI, really.
