It’s the first time these specific materials have been used in a working device, which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying. The sound range is solid too, covering 500 Hz to 10 kHz — plenty for your average ear to enjoy without missing a beat.
They even tested it with music and broadcasts in simulated airplane seats. Because, let's be honest, those tiny airplane headphones are basically a suggestion. Adding those elastic meta-units dramatically improved the sound direction, meaning you can binge-watch your rom-com in economy class, and the person pretending to sleep next to you will remain blissfully unaware.

The best part? It’s 3D-printed and modular, so engineers can tweak the design for different scenarios. Different seat layouts? No problem. Different beam angles? Easy peasy.
