They even have an autonomous analysis system called CELS (a NASA TechLeap Prize winner, no less) that monitors production in real-time with minimal human intervention. The October missions will put this tech to the test. One flight will produce material for LambdaVision, a company developing a protein-based artificial retina. This marks Helogen's first manufacturing run outside the International Space Station, proving they're ready to go solo. The second mission will focus on Helogen's own biomaterials for knee and shoulder applications, gathering crucial data on their mechanical and structural quality.
The Long Road to Space-Made Meds
Getting a new medical device approved for human use is notoriously difficult on Earth. Doing it in space? That's a whole new level of regulatory acrobatics.
