Yamaha is launching the R2, a new sport bike designed to follow its popular R15 model. The R15 has been a top choice for almost two decades.

The R2 features a 204cc single-cylinder DOHC engine. It produces 26 horsepower and 14 lb-ft (19.1 Nm) of torque. This power should feel quick because the motorcycle weighs only 328 lb (149 kg) when wet.

Powerdrift noted that Yamaha chose to skip the variable valve actuation found in the R15. This change means the R2 delivers more power at mid-to-high engine speeds, rather than focusing on low-end torque.

Design and Features

Unlike the R15's Deltabox frame, the R2 uses a steel tube diamond frame. Yamaha says this frame is light and flexible. The R2's design is very similar to the R15, making them hard to tell apart. You can spot the R2 by its dual horizontal daytime running lights (DRLs) and specific badging.

The R2 offers a sporty riding position with clip-on handlebars. The seat height is 31.9 inches (810 mm). Its fuel tank holds just over 3 gallons (12 liters). Yamaha estimates about 80 mpg (2.94 L/100km), giving it a range of 254 miles (408 km).

Modern features include adjustable foot pegs and an assist and slipper clutch for smooth shifts. Mid- and high-end versions have a bidirectional quick shifter. Traction control and keyless ignition are also included.

The new 5-inch color TFT dash connects to your phone via Bluetooth. It offers three ride modes: Sport for sharp engine response, Street for regular riding, and Rain for better control on wet roads.

Braking comes from 282-mm front and 220-mm rear discs. It has radially mounted brake calipers and dual-channel ABS.

Availability and Pricing

The R2 made its global debut in India and will be manufactured there. It will be sold alongside the current R15.

Beyond Yamaha's signature blue, the R2 comes in these other handsome colorways too

The base R2 starts at INR 230,000, which is about US$2,407. There are four color options. Some cost more and include a quick shifter. The top-end R2M comes in Metallic Gray with a silver swing arm, faux suede seat, keyless ignition, preload adjustable front forks, and adjustable levers. It costs INR 253,000, or about $2,647.

The R2 will compete with bikes like KTM's RC 200. The RC 200 has similar power and torque and costs about the same. However, the KTM has a slightly larger fuel tank and is heavier at 353 lb (160 kg).

Ben Purvis of Cycle World suggested in May that the R2 might come to the US. A 2025 trademark filing supports this idea. The R2 could be a good choice for new riders on track days. It also offers a fun ride for experienced riders without being too expensive.
