Since 1995, California’s Rising Sun Center for Opportunity has been quietly pulling off a rather brilliant two-for-one deal: training over 3,000 young people for careers in renewable energy while simultaneously helping neighbors slash their utility bills. Because, apparently, we can have nice things.
The program focuses on getting young women, people of color, and formerly incarcerated individuals into the green jobs sector. And here’s where the magic really happens: these trainees then perform “green house calls” for free. Think of it as an eco-friendly house party, but instead of awkward small talk, you get LED light bulbs, power strips, weather stripping, and water-saving devices.
“We use this no-cost service... as a way to give youth earn-and-learn experience and career exposure,” explained Sofia Canela Torres, a senior program manager. Which, if you think about it, is both practical and deeply satisfying.

Good news for anyone living in a drafty house with a perpetually running toilet: the center announced in June 2025 that it's expanding its climate careers program. It will now reach 13 counties across the San Joaquin Valley, Monterey Bay Area, and Eastern Sierra.
Julia Hatton, President and CEO of Rising Sun, pointed out that rural communities in Central California often get overlooked when it comes to programs that help reduce those eye-watering utility bills. So, this expansion isn't just about efficiency; it's about equity. The region, Hatton notes, has been a focus for Rising Sun for over a decade, and their partnership with CCR REN is set to bring even more energy efficiency and job opportunities to local, rural residents. Because who doesn't love a lower bill and a brighter future?
