Language Barriers and Healthcare Access for Immigrants
Immigrants make up a significant portion of the American agricultural workforce, yet they face numerous challenges when it comes to accessing healthcare. According to the USDA, between 2020 and 2022, approximately 68% of farm workers in the US were immigrants - 7% had obtained US citizenship, 19% were other authorized immigrants like green card holders, and 42% held no work authorization.
To help this vulnerable population navigate the healthcare system, organizations like the Migrant Clinician Network (MCN) have stepped in with creative solutions. MCN has been operating for 40 years, offering case management, training for healthcare workers, and educational outreach to improve health outcomes for migrant farm workers.
One of MCN's key initiatives involves producing educational comic books in both English and Spanish. These comics use clear illustrations, facts, and protective measures to help farm workers understand occupational hazards, climate risks, and infectious diseases they may face - issues like heat, pesticides, wildfires, and avian influenza.

MCN distributes thousands of these resources each year, providing a crucial lifeline for immigrant farm workers navigating the complexities of the US healthcare system.
