The Pocketbyte is a new portable computer designed for customization. It can be a music player, a gaming device, or even a personal digital assistant.
This device started as a DIY project. It is now becoming a modular system with its own community.
How It Works
The Pocketbyte uses an ESP32-S3 processor with 8 MB of PSRAM. It has a microSD card slot for up to 32 GB of storage. A 1,500-mAh battery powers it, and a 2.8-inch IPS LCD screen works well in sunlight. It also includes a speaker and a 3.5-mm headphone jack.

Start Your News DetoxThe device runs on an open-source software platform based on FreeRTOS. It can also run Arduino. Users can download free apps from a community app store via Wi-Fi. They can also write their own apps in C or C++. A simulator lets users test their software on a desktop before loading it onto the Pocketbyte.
What makes the Pocketbyte special is its modular pin connector. This allows users to add different hardware accessories. For example, you can plug in a gamepad for retro games. You could also attach a BlackBerry-style QWERTY keyboard for taking notes. Another option is to connect a breadboard to control other electronics.
The device is compact, measuring about 3 x 2 inches (75 x 55 mm). This is similar in size to a credit card.
Future Plans
The Pocketbyte is still under development by a teenager in Canada. A small number of developer kits will be available for pre-order in the Northern Hemisphere summer. These are expected to ship later in the year.
A community for the project has already started on Discord. The developer plans to add more software and release STL files. These files will let others 3D print cases for their own modular add-ons.
