Tokyo's Art Week Returns With Open Studios, Night Museums, and Way More Art

Tokyo's Tennoz district, a former Edo-period coastal defense turned logistics hub, is now a full-blown art destination. And come September, it’s throwing a party. TENNOZ ART WEEK 2026, now in its fourth year, is set to transform the canalside warehouses into a vibrant canvas of contemporary art, open studios, and even a night museum.

From September 10 to 13, Warehouse TERRADA, the company that basically made Tennoz an art mecca, will host the multi-venue bash. They're even partnering with Tokyo Gendai, an international art fair running concurrently at PACIFICO Yokohama, complete with free shuttle buses for ticket holders. Because nothing says "sophisticated art experience" like not having to worry about parking.

More Than Just Galleries

What started in 1950 as a humble warehousing business, Warehouse TERRADA has, since the 2000s, pivoted hard into the art world. They've got everything from bonded galleries (where imported art can chill out without customs duties immediately kicking in) to artist studios and even an art gallery café. It's essentially an art ecosystem, conveniently located near Haneda Airport for all those international collectors and enthusiasts.

This year's Art Week is packed. The main event, Tennoz Contemporary, will feature 38 galleries from Japan and beyond at the TERRADA ART COMPLEX. Resident galleries are teaming up with guest galleries, creating a dynamic mix of established and emerging talent. Think MAKI Gallery collaborating with TEZUKAYAMA GALLERY, and Tomio Koyama Gallery partnering with KAYOKOYUKI. It's a gallery-palooza, and admission is free, which is always a pleasant surprise.

But it's not just about finished works. For the first time, TERRADA ART STUDIO Tennoz is opening its doors to the public. You can wander through artists' actual workspaces, see their process, and maybe even snag a piece directly from the creator. Participating artists include Saeko Asai, Kzeymmt, and GOU SHIBATA. It's like peeking behind the curtain, but with better lighting.

If you're into the origins of art, PIGMENT TOKYO is offering a workshop on eginu, a traditional silk painting technique from the Edo period. You'll use Japanese colors and learn reverse-side coloring. Because sometimes, the old ways are the coolest ways.

And for those who prefer their culture after dark, WHAT MUSEUM is extending its hours on September 11 and 12 for a "Night Museum" event. Imagine experiencing an architecture exhibition, Corrugated / Coral – Eight Practices to Project Architecture Afar, in the quiet calm of the evening. Plus, curators will be leading tours, which means you might actually understand what you're looking at. Which, let's be honest, is half the battle with contemporary art.

Basically, Tennoz Art Week is offering a full-spectrum art immersion, from seeing the masters to watching the magic happen in an artist's studio, all set against a backdrop of Tokyo's industrial-chic canals. Good luck trying to fit it all in.
