The market for camper pods that work with any vehicle is growing. The Tusca HitchHiker, which came out a year ago, became the Freedom Camper lineup from Redneck Blinds in 2025. Other companies are also making similar truck and trailer pods.
Redneck Blinds is now offering its largest Freedom Camper yet, the XL model. This new pod is too big for a standard pickup truck bed. It needs a utility trailer or a flatbed truck to carry it. The XL model offers enough space to sleep and spend time in during the day. It's a cozy, portable lounge that costs less than $5,000.
The Freedom XL Camper
The new Freedom Camper is called the 72 x 89-inch model, but "XL" is an easier name to remember. Its 72-inch width is more than a foot wider than the previous 58 x 89-inch model. That older model was designed for 8-foot trailers or pickup beds.

Start Your News DetoxThe 58-inch wide Freedom pod could fit inside a full-size pickup truck bed above the wheel wells. However, the new 72-inch width is too wide for even full-size trucks. The Freedom XL is made for utility trailers with a floor width of 6 feet or more, or for trucks with a flatbed. This design gives it more interior space. Its 68 x 85-inch floor can fit a super-queen-size mattress or two cots side-by-side.
The XL pod is simple inside, with basic comforts but no extra features. It has carpeted floors, two slider windows, and vents for airflow and to prevent condensation. The basic pod also includes a door and strips on the roof for mounting racks or accessories.

Redneck Blinds increased the front wall of the XL by 11 inches compared to older models. This change makes the roof angle less steep, adding more headroom and living space inside.
Durable and Lightweight Design
Freedom camper pods are made from a wood-free shell of high-density foam. This foam is coated with a polyurea material, similar to a truck bed liner. This construction makes them tough enough for rough terrain and various weather conditions. Redneck says they can handle temperatures as low as 20 °F (-6.7 °C).
To show how durable the foam construction is, Redneck released a video last year. It shows a Freedom camper being hit with sledgehammers and dropped from a 15-foot forklift.
Despite its toughness, the HD foam keeps the Freedom XL very light, with a base weight under 200 pounds (91 kg). Like previous models, two people can carry and install the XL. Its total weight is similar to some pickup caps, offering a hard-walled camping solution that uses minimal payload.
These simple, wood-free camper pods offer a great option for campers. They save thousands of dollars compared to traditional truck campers and small trailers. They also act as a blank canvas, allowing owners to customize their truck or trailer setup. For example, with a longer trailer, you can have a hard-sided shelter and a large deck for carrying dirt bikes, tools, or other gear. This is a more affordable option than a fully equipped toy-hauler camper.

While the compact interior has its limits, it's a good choice for those looking for super-simple RVs like teardrop or rooftop-tent trailers.
The Freedom Camper 72 x 89 starts at a sale price of $4,399. Buyers can add truck or trailer mounting hardware for less than $100. Other options include a ventilation fan and a rooftop air conditioner.
