Wildfires are happening more often. This means campfires are often not allowed during much of the camping season. A company called Happy Caveman, based in San Diego, has created a product to keep you warm when wood fires are banned. They are currently raising money for it on Kickstarter.
Happy Caveman designers say that even without fire bans, wood fires are not always the best choice. Gathering and chopping wood takes a lot of effort. Wood fires also produce smoke and smells that can stick to clothes. Propane firepits solve some of these issues. However, they give off less warmth because much of the heat goes up into the sky.
The Happy Caveman Campfire aims to fix these problems. It does not need firewood or maintenance. It produces no smoke. It also keeps more heat focused around it. The creators used the idea behind traditional wood fires: hot coals, not flames, are what truly radiate heat and keep you warm.

If you enjoy the smell of burning wood or cooking over a fire, propane cannot replace that. But if your main goal is warmth, the Happy Caveman might be a good option.
The product is simple. It is a tube made of 304 stainless steel. It connects to a propane tank with a hose. The propane burns inside, heating the steel until it glows. This glowing steel then radiates infrared heat. A special plate on top of the tube slows the exhaust. This keeps hot gases inside longer. Openings on the sides let flames and hot exhaust escape sideways. This directs heat towards people sitting around it, instead of up into the sky.
The tube is 66 cm (26 inches) tall. The creators say this height is right for its use. It weighs 1.8 kg (4 lb), which is light compared to most propane firepits. However, you still need to carry a propane tank. This means the Campfire is not for trips into the deep backcountry.
A 9-kg (20-lb) tank can provide up to nine hours of heat on full power. Smaller tanks can also be used. But anything under 2.3 kg (5 lb) is likely not practical for regular use. A 0.45-kg (1-lb) tank gives only half an hour of heat at full power. Because of this, the creators do not even offer an adapter for it.
Safety and Cost
The Happy Caveman has a folding stand for stability. This stand stays cool, making it safe to use on wooden decks. The tube itself gets very hot. Touching the glowing metal is dangerous. It is important to keep hands, children, and pets away from it. Even though it looks different from a traditional campfire, it gets just as hot.
The planned retail price is US$499. This price is in the middle range compared to other propane firepits. The company says it is a product you buy once. It is made of stainless steel and brass. It has no parts that wear out easily and need replacing.
You can pledge US$399 on Kickstarter to get the Happy Caveman Campfire. This price includes a propane hose. If all goes as planned, shipping is set for January 2027.
