BMW is bringing its new electric design, called Neue Klasse, to its entire electric car lineup. This started with the iX3 SUV last week. Now, the popular 3 series is getting the same treatment with the i3 50 xDrive electric sedan. It looks much like the prototype shown last July.

A Fresh Look for the i3

The new i3 has an angular front with its kidney grilles merged with four-eye lights. This design is more subtle than the current i4 model. The car's body lines are more refined, and it features narrow tail lamps at the back. The i3's proportions give it a sporty, wide stance. Its long wheelbase and flared wheel arches add to its appealing look.

Inside, BMW chose more traditional interior options, moving away from the unique yellow corduroy seen in last year's concept. However, there is a distinct terracotta-like "Castanea Bicolor" option available. An expansive glass roof covers the interior.

The cockpit features a squarish steering wheel with metallic spokes and haptic touch sliders. A 17.3-inch infotainment screen in the center includes climate controls. The console is streamlined with a few buttons. Alexa is integrated for voice commands.

A Panoramic Vision display spans the windshield, showing information without distracting the driver. There's also a 3D head-up display for the driver. Ambient lights in the dashboard and cabin enhance the interior feel.

Performance and Technology

BMW states the i3 has 20 times more computing power than previous models. This includes the "Heart of Joy" system, which manages driving dynamics. Three other systems handle driving and parking assistance, infotainment, and vehicle access and cabin functions.

The suspension uses stroke-dependent shock absorbers and a new five-link rear axle. BMW says this setup, combined with the Heart of Joy system, offers a responsive and spirited ride while remaining comfortable for long trips.

The all-wheel drive i3 has two motors that produce 469 hp and 475 lb-ft (645 Nm) of torque. These are powered by a cylindrical-cell gen6 battery pack, which offers up to 560 miles (900 km) on a full charge. The car supports 400-kW DC fast charging, allowing it to gain 248 miles (400 km) of range in just 10 minutes.

The battery is built into the chassis for better handling. AC charging at 11 kW is standard, with a 22 kW option available. The i3 also supports bidirectional charging, meaning it can power a home or appliances.

More versions of the i3, including a single-motor efficiency model and a touring version, are expected later.

The i3 50 xDrive is expected to arrive in the Northern Hemisphere this fall. It is estimated to cost less than the current i4's US$58,000 price. It will compete with the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2.
