But that iconic blue comes with a rather murky secret: making one pair of jeans guzzles around 20 gallons of water and a cocktail of harsh chemicals. Which, if you think about it, is a lot of H2O for something you probably only wash once every six months anyway.
Enter Wtrlss, a startup that's decided our favorite fabric shouldn't be such a thirsty beast. Their new digital printing method uses a mere two tablespoons of water and some rather clever bio-based dyes to get the job done. Suddenly, your jeans' carbon footprint just got a lot daintier.
The Indigo Imposter
Traditional denim dyeing is a whole industrial ballet: cotton yarn takes a dip in multiple dye baths, indigo (or its synthetic twin) is chemically coaxed into binding with the fibers, then bleaches and lasers get to work stripping some of that color away for the desired "washed-down" vibe. Blue and white yarns are woven together, and then, because apparently that's not enough, the fabric often gets more finishing.

It's applied directly to undyed fabric rolls using industrial inkjet printers. While digital printing isn't exactly new, it typically just colors the surface. Wtrlss’s tech, however, fully bonds the dye to the fiber in a single step.
CEO Dustin White explains it best: they built "the first indigo replacement color set that works digitally." Meaning, for the first time, you can get that deep indigo blue without actually using indigo. It's like getting all the flavor of a complicated dish with half the ingredients. Designers can even control how deeply the color penetrates the fiber, opening up a whole new world of denim aesthetics.
