Enter Artifact InSPECtor, NASA's latest project that lets you, a regular human, help teach AI how to tell the difference between a galaxy and a glitch. Because apparently, that's where we are now: training robots to clean up their own messes in space.

These telescopes use something called a spectrograph — basically, a fancy prism that splits a galaxy's light into a rainbow of colors, creating a unique pattern called a spectrum. Scientists read these spectra like a cosmic fingerprint, revealing a galaxy's distance, its stars, and even what its central black hole is up to.
But space is messy. Sometimes, that precious light gets photobombed by "artifacts" — signals that aren't actually from space. Think of it like lens flare on your phone camera, or a smudge on the screen, but on a galactic scale. These can be anything from reflected light within the telescope itself to cosmic rays zipping through the detector.

Astronomers usually rely on AI to filter out these digital blemishes. The AI learns to recognize artifacts, much like your phone learns to recognize faces (though hopefully with fewer awkward misidentifications). The problem is, new telescopes mean new kinds of data, and new kinds of smudges. AI isn't inherently great at spotting errors it's never seen before.
That's where you come in. As an Artifact InSPECtor volunteer, you'll be presented with real data from the Euclid telescope (and eventually, Roman). The project teaches you what to look for, and your input helps fine-tune the AI's instructions. It's a surprisingly satisfying task, like playing a super-important cosmic "spot the difference" game.
