Zuvi, a beauty-tech company known for its light-based hair dryers, is launching a new product called ColorBox. This at-home system lets users create custom hair dye colors. It's designed for people who enjoy bright, bold shades and like to try new looks.
How ColorBox Works
ColorBox uses a simple idea: mixing three primary colors can create thousands of shades. It works much like a printer. The device has cartridges for yellow, blue, and red dye. It also includes a conditioner-based diluting cream.
Users pick a color through a mobile app. They can choose from over 1,000 preset shades or create their own. A special feature lets users upload an image and tap a color they like. The ColorBox then dispenses the correct dye amounts into a bowl.

Regular news is designed to drain you. We're a non-profit built to restore you. Every story we publish is scored for impact, progress, and hope.
Start Your News DetoxAfter dispensing, users manually mix the dyes into a cream. This takes only a few minutes. If the color isn't perfect, users can add more dye to get the right tone. The app saves a history of all created shades, making it easy to re-create favorites. ColorBox can also make a matching color-depositing conditioner to help maintain the shade.

Dye Formula and Benefits
The device uses a semi-permanent dye. This type of dye colors the outer layer of hair without changing its natural pigment. Results can vary based on a person's base hair color or if it's been lightened. The color fades gradually with washing, offering a low-commitment option for frequent experimentation.
Semi-permanent dye has a thick, creamy texture. This makes it easy to apply at home without dripping. Accidental stains on skin can be wiped off easily.

Zuvi is known for its environmentally friendly approach. The ColorBox dye is vegan, cruelty-free, and free of ammonia, PPD, and peroxide. ColorBox offers a practical way to experiment with hair color. It removes the need to buy full bottles of colors that might not be used again. It also solves the problem of not finding an ideal shade.
Users can create their own colors and reduce waste by mixing only what they need. This system empowers users to become creators, designing and exploring new shades. Similar approaches have been seen with custom lipstick and perfume.

ColorBox will cost $179, but preorders are available for $149. The package includes a scale plate, cartridge set, bowl, gloves, mixing whisk, application brush, and a USB Type-C cable. Shipping begins on June 1st.
