Why it matters: Emerging artists gain crucial visibility through their New York debuts while collectors discover innovative contemporary work in an expanded, accessible Lower East Side venue.

Independent has announced the 76 exhibitors for its 17th art fair. The event will run from May 14–17 at a new location, Pier 36, in the Lower East Side.

What to Expect at the Fair

The fair will showcase work from over 100 artists. More than 70% of the booths will feature single-artist presentations. Some of these include Jason Fox at David Kordansky, Petra Cortright at Interval, and Taína Cruz at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler. Comme des Garçons will also present a solo show by Rei Kawakubo.

Over one-third of the artists will have their first New York solo exhibition. This program is called "Independent Debuts." Artists like Omar Mismar at Secci, Arna Óttarsdóttir at i8 Gallery, and Nabeeha Mohamed at WHATIFTHEWORLD are part of this group.

With its move to the Lower East Side, Independent is also inviting nearby galleries to exhibit for the first time. These include Spencer Brownstone Gallery, Kiang Malingue, David Peter Francis, and Post Times.

New Design and Installations

The new venue will feature a fresh look and feel. D_P_S (Diogo Passarinho Studio) is handling the exhibition design. Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu (SO–IL) will focus on the exterior. This ensures the fair fits in with its Lower East Side surroundings.

For the first time, Independent will also have sculptural installations throughout the fair. These include works by Gretchen Bender, presented by Sprüth Magers, and Francis Upritchard, brought by Anton Kern. Nikolas Ventourakis (via Callirrhoë) has been commissioned to create an installation at the entrance. It is inspired by his photographs of trash heaps.

Elizabeth Dee, Independent founder, shared her excitement. She noted that moving to Pier 36 allowed them to "shake things up." She expects the exhibition design, new commissions, and New York debuts to exceed expectations.
