Thousands of Iranian fans recently packed Tehran's Enqelab Square, not for a concert, but for a good old-fashioned national team sendoff. Team Melli, Iran's national football squad, was there to soak up the cheers, make patriotic declarations, and unveil their 2026 World Cup kit. Because apparently, that's where we are now: planning for the next World Cup before the current one even kicks off.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), declared it the "best sendoff" in four World Cup cycles. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying given the logistical hurdles they're about to face.
Visa Drama Before Kickoff
See, here's the kicker: Iran is slated to play its group matches in the United States. And getting into the U.S. for anyone with even a whisper of connection to certain Iranian organizations has become, shall we say, complicated.

Start Your News DetoxIt's not just a hunch. Back in 2024, an FFIRI delegation, led by Taj himself, was reportedly turned away at Toronto's airport. The reason? Alleged ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which Canada has helpfully designated a terrorist organization. The U.S. has done the same, making this less of a minor inconvenience and more of a full-blown international incident waiting to happen.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made it pretty clear: anyone with IRGC ties isn't getting in. So now, Iran's football federation has essentially punted the ball to FIFA, saying it's up to the international body to secure visas for their entire squad and support staff. FFIRI secretary-general Hedayat Mombeini publicly stated they're waiting on those visas, hoping FIFA's promises will actually, you know, deliver.
Before all that potential drama, the team is off to Turkiye for a training camp, with a warm-up match against The Gambia on the schedule. Because nothing says "we're totally not worried about international travel" like a friendly match in Antalya while your entire team's entry into the host country hangs in the balance.
