The Jewish Digital Cultural Recovery Project (JDCRP) has just beefed up its Legacy Explorer tool with artificial intelligence. This means researchers can now simultaneously scour five different archives — including the infamous Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg archive in Paris — for details on a single object. No more jumping between tabs like a digital detective on too much coffee.

Before this update, if you wanted to trace a painting's journey from a Jewish family's home to some Nazi official's study, you had to manually sift through each archive. Imagine trying to find a needle in five separate haystacks, then manually comparing each needle. The new AI document-scanning tools do the heavy lifting, connecting the dots across disparate records about the same piece of art or artifact.

This tool isn't just for experts; it's designed to give both historians and the public a fighting chance at understanding an object's true, often tragic, ownership history.
This isn't the only AI entering the fray. Just last month, professors at Santa Clara University launched their own AI tool aimed at helping heirs track down Nazi-looted art, specifically by searching the Jeu de Paume database.
Deirdre Berger, chair of JDCRP’s executive board, summed it up perfectly: the expanded Legacy Explorer offers descendants of Holocaust survivors a vital pathway. A way to reclaim not just property, but a piece of their family's story that was violently ripped away. Which, if you think about it, is a pretty compelling use for artificial intelligence.
