UC Berkeley's graduate programs continue to excel, with many earning top spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings. Over 50 programs landed in the top 25, and more than 40 made it into the top 10.
Berkeley's Top-Ranked Programs
The 2026 Best Graduate Schools rankings were released on April 7. They evaluated thousands of programs across hundreds of universities. Berkeley's engineering, business, and public policy programs maintained their high rankings. Chemistry was named the number one program in a new category for science Ph.D. programs.
The College of Engineering tied for first in civil engineering, computer engineering, and electrical, electronic, and communications engineering. It also ranked number one for environmental/environmental health engineering.

How Rankings Are Determined
Each year, U.S. News surveys six main academic areas: business, education, engineering, law, medicine, and nursing. These fields are assessed using data from the schools and input from experts. This year, U.S. News added new rankings for several health fields and, for the first time in years, ranked several science fields. These included biology, biostatistics, chemistry, earth sciences, mathematics, and physics.
Last year, U.S. News ranked several Berkeley social sciences and English programs number one. These rankings were not updated this year, as not all programs are ranked annually. UC Berkeley Law does not actively participate in the U.S. News ranking process, but its programs still scored well. The law school also received high marks in other recent surveys.
