The FIFA World Cup, football's biggest party, is officially entering its knockout stages. Which, for the first time ever, means a Round of 32. Because apparently, 32 teams just weren't enough. We've officially expanded to 48 teams, making this 2026 North American tournament the biggest yet. More football, more drama, and certainly more excuses to call in sick.
The Gauntlet Ahead
The format is straightforward enough: the top two teams from each of the 12 groups get a golden ticket. Then, just to keep things interesting, eight more spots are handed out to the best third-place teams. Because who doesn't love a good underdog story, or at least a team that barely scraped by?
This new Round of 32 kicks off the real pressure cooker. From there, it's a familiar sprint through the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, and Semifinals. There's even a bronze medal match for those who almost made it, before the grand finale on July 19.
