Folding kayaks are known for being portable, but they can still be quite heavy. Most weigh between 17 and 40 pounds. The Pontos 2.0 is different. It weighs only seven pounds and folds down to the size of a two-person tent.
This new kayak is the creation of Adam Mulsow, an entrepreneur and kayaker from Lubbock, Texas. It's an improved version of his earlier Pontos model. The Pontos 2.0 will soon launch on Kickstarter.
How the Pontos 2.0 Works
The Pontos 2.0 uses a "skin-on-frame" design. Its frame is made from carbon fiber tubes connected by a shock cord and special polymer fittings.

Start Your News DetoxOnce the frame is set up, a waterproof skin is pulled over it and zipped closed. This skin is made from heavy-duty, raft-grade TPU-bonded nylon. Finally, the seat is inflated and secured inside. The whole process takes only five to seven minutes.
An internal keel pole runs along the bottom of the kayak. This helps the Pontos 2.0 stay straight in flat water. Some heavier folding kayaks have flat hulls, which makes them harder to steer straight.
Key Improvements
The Pontos 2.0 features several upgrades from the original model. The fabric in reinforced areas at the ends of the boat and where the ribs connect to the keel is now heavier. It uses 840D TPU nylon, up from 420D. The seat fabric has also been improved, from 70D to 210D.
The frame's four small rib sections have been combined into two larger ones. This makes assembly easier and strengthens the cockpit supports. The fittings, which were previously 3D-printed, are now injection molded for better durability.
Mulsow is seeking backers for the Pontos 2.0 on Kickstarter. Early bird pricing will be $525.
