In tests with 11 participants, the filtered audio scored more than twice as high for clarity and comprehension compared to unfiltered sound. The prototype currently handles conversations with up to four other speakers without noticeable delay — so a group chat, not just one-on-one.

Shyam Gollakota, the senior researcher on the project, explains the insight behind it: "When we're conversing with a specific group of people, our speech naturally follows a turn-taking rhythm. And we can train AI to predict and track those rhythms using only audio, without the need for implanting electrodes."

This matters especially for people with hearing difficulties, who often struggle most in noisy environments. But it's also a straightforward win for anyone who's ever nodded along while missing half a sentence at a dinner party.

The current version has limitations — it stumbles when people interrupt each other or talk over one another, which is exactly when real conversations get messy. The team is refining the models to handle more languages and messier real-world scenarios. They've also shown that similar AI models can run on chips small enough for hearing aids and earbuds, which means this isn't just a lab prototype. The pathway to actual devices is already there.
