Ever wished your commute involved less traffic and more... flying? Archer Aviation is here to make that fantasy feel a little closer to reality. The company just kicked off a three-state demonstration tour for its electric air taxi, taking its eVTOL aircraft from California to Texas and Florida in the coming weeks.
Because apparently, that's where we are now: full-sized electric aircraft zipping around for fun, or, you know, science.
No Traffic, Just Takeoff
The inaugural flight was a swift 34-mile roundtrip between Salinas and Hollister, California. The aircraft, aptly named Midnight, hit speeds up to 125 mph and soared to a respectable 3,550 feet. Each leg of the journey took about 12 minutes. Archer's CEO, Adam Goldstein, pointed out the obvious: it was significantly faster than driving. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying for anyone who still uses asphalt.

The FAA has already marked Florida, Texas, and California as key states for its eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, so this tour isn't just a joyride; it's a strategic preview.
Building the Sky-High Commute Infrastructure
Air taxi developers are aiming for limited commercial flights as early as the end of this year, pending FAA blessing. This means a flurry of "vertiports" (because "airport" is so last century), adapted existing airports, and charging stations popping up for these electric birds.
Archer, clearly thinking big, was named the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Olympic Games in Southern California. They even bought Hawthorne Municipal Airport in Los Angeles County, which will become their main regional hub. They're also cooking up a vertiport in downtown Los Angeles with entertainment giant AEG. Because nothing says future like arriving at a concert via a silent, electric flying machine.
Next up, Midnight will be making appearances across Northern California, including Monterey, San Jose, and San Francisco. After that, it's off to the Los Angeles area, all in close collaboration with the FAA and local partners. Specific dates are still under wraps, but it seems the future of not-driving is very much in motion.
