Why it matters: This innovative kit fosters engineering skills and a love for flight in enthusiasts, potentially inspiring future innovators in aviation and design.

PowerUp Toys' Starflux Balsa Wood RC Airplane Kit offers a hands-on building experience. Each step in the assembly process affects how well the plane flies. This kit is a collaboration with Nighthawk Gliders, known for their small balsa wood models.

The Starflux uses PowerUp's 4.0 smartphone-controlled engine. It allows for more experimentation than earlier paper and wood designs. The kit also features a 2-in-1 design. The finished wooden body can rotate 180 degrees, changing how the plane flies. This model is designed to be more "floaty," offering better control for creative maneuvers.

Building the Starflux

The kit is recommended for ages 14 and up. However, the reviewer found it to be a challenging build. It involves intricate work, superglue, and sanding. The materials are delicate, and there are many steps. The reviewer accidentally broke a wing piece while building, highlighting the need for careful sanding.

The box contains laser-cut balsa wood pieces and a detailed instruction manual. The manual is a step-by-step guide mixed with a retro comic strip. Some smaller pieces can be tricky to position correctly. The manual might also be difficult to use if you have limited workspace.

If workbench space is limited, watch the instructional video instead

PowerUp also provides an excellent instructional video. This video helps show where to glue and how to get the angles right. If you use normal superglue, you will need to pause construction to let it dry. The video uses an accelerant to speed up the process.

Building the plane can be a meditative experience. Even newcomers can start to understand what will help or hinder the plane's flight. It feels more like a relaxing craft project than a quick assembly job.

Flying and Experimenting

Once the plane is built, you attach the 4.0 hardware. This is the easiest part of the build. After charging the battery for about 30 minutes, you connect the plane to the PowerUp app via Bluetooth. The app allows for in-flight control adjustments and has settings for different weather conditions.

The reviewer's finished model did not fly well. It was a difficult lesson in aerodynamics. Once parts are glued, it is hard to make adjustments without damaging the plane. Other builders have also found success is not guaranteed with the Starflux. The journey of building might be more enjoyable than the flight itself.

The accessories kit lets you get more experimental with materials and design

The comprehensive kit also includes the bright-red PowerUp 4.0 paper plane. This uses the same carbon-fiber body for power and control. Turning a classic paper plane into a smartphone-controlled device is a novel experience. The paper model allows for more flexibility in adjustments.

An accessories box is also included. It contains front and rear landing gear, connectors, a front clip, screws, and a screwdriver. This kit lets you experiment with your paper plane using other materials like foam and cardboard. This allows you to see how different shapes, weights, and material positions affect aerodynamics.

The kit also comes with PowerUp's hit paper plane

The Starflux Balsa Wood RC Airplane Kit is available from PowerUp for $116.
