Why it matters: This innovative bike trailer empowers cyclists to transport more with ease, promoting sustainable transportation and active lifestyles for a healthier community.

Most people don't think much about bike cargo trailers. They often see them as simple towed carts. But the Veolo Bike Trailer 2.0 aims to be different. It's designed to be light, smooth, and well-equipped.

German cyclist and industrial designer Johann Schmidt created the Veolo 2.0. It's currently part of a Kickstarter campaign.

The new 2.0 model is lighter than the first Veolo. It weighs 6.7 kg (14.7 lb) compared to 8.5 kg (18.7 lb). It also has a different shape and focuses more on modularity. Plus, it now comes with many accessories.

Design and Features

The trailer has a frame made from 6061 aerospace-grade aluminum. Each of its two wheels has 45 mm of elastomer suspension. The wheels use Kenda 20 x 2.10-inch tires. They can be quickly removed for storage using QuickLock hubs.

Loads sit on a Batyline textile mesh insert. This insert is reinforced with hypalon and carbon fiber in key areas. The trailer has many anchor points, straps, and Fidlock magnetic attachments. These help secure cargo of different shapes and sizes. It can carry up to 60 kg (132 lb). The older Veolo model could handle up to 80 kg (176 lb).

The trailer's drawbar connects to the bike's rear axle. It uses a patented ball-and-socket QuickMount system. This system allows it to attach or detach in about one second. Buyers can choose from three drawbar options: a standard Base, a Long model for longer loads, or a Multifunctional model that swivels up for hand-towing.

Accessories and Availability

The Veolo 2.0 offers an "ecosystem" of accessories. These include a 180-liter soft-sided bag and a 220-liter lockable box. There are also load bars for long items and a mesh-sided dog carrier. All these accessories mount securely to the trailer.

A pledge of €490 (about US$572) on Kickstarter will get you a Veolo Bike Trailer 2.0. The planned retail price is €750 ($875). Accessories range from €179 ($209) for the bag to €269 ($314) for the dog carrier.
