This robot hand can detach from its arm and crawl around

Straight out of a sci-fi thriller, engineers in Switzerland have crafted a chilling, spider-like robot hand that can detach, grasp objects, and scuttle across surfaces using its nimble fingers.

Why it matters: This innovative robot hand design could lead to more versatile and efficient robotic systems that can assist humans in a wide range of tasks, from manufacturing to search and rescue operations.

Engineers in Switzerland have created a detachable, spider-like robot hand capable of grabbing multiple objects and using its fingers to crawl. The symmetrical design and flexible fingers allow the robot hand to transport objects on either side of its body, mimicking the dexterity of the human hand but with greater efficiency.

The robot hand can separate itself from a mounted robot arm, tip-toe towards small objects, pick them up, and carry them on its back. This bizarre form factor is more than just a creepy concept - the researchers say it's an example of a design that's more efficient than the human hand, unburdened by natural selection's constraints.

"Evolution is a slow process, whose path is influenced by a variety of developmental and environmental constraints," the team writes. "It does not explore all that could be possible."

The robot hand can simultaneously hold up to three different objects, with a combined weight of around five pounds. Its fully symmetrical design allows its five fingers and dual thumbs to move with as much flexibility backward as they do forward, replicating 33 different types of human grasping motions.

The researchers drew inspiration from non-human animals like octopuses and certain insects that use their finger-like limbs to move around and manipulate objects. Octopuses, in particular, are capable of opening jars faster than some humans.

While the design is meant to address the biological limitations of the human hand, the researchers found that more fingers aren't always better. Each additional finger adds mass, increasing the chances of collisions and making overall movement more clumsy. They determined that increasing the finger count from three to five improved the hand's crawling efficiency, but adding more beyond that resulted in diminishing returns.

This approach to robot design runs counter to the growing trend in humanoid robots, where major tech companies are investing heavily to create hands that mimic human design. The hand crawler takes a different path, potentially allowing a humanoid robot to use the detachable hand to perform factory work, reach distant objects, or rummage through cluttered spaces.
