In news that probably had the White House Historical Association dusting off some very old ledgers, Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, just welcomed their fourth child.
Alec Neel Vance arrived on Sunday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, making him the first baby born to a sitting VP in a staggering 154 years. Let that number sink in. The last time this happened, in 1870, Vice President Schuyler Colfax was in office. One can only imagine the kind of baby gifts that were exchanged back then. Probably a very sturdy rocking horse and a tiny, serious top hat.
"Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother," the couple shared in a statement. Because, naturally, the first thing you do after bringing a new human into the world is issue a press release. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying.

The Vances, who met at Yale Law School (because of course they did), are already parents to Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. This new addition seems to fit right in with the Vice President's well-known stance on, well, more babies. He's been pretty vocal about wanting to boost those declining US birth rates since he started his political career in 2021, even declaring at the 2025 March for Life rally, "I want more babies in the United States of America."
And it seems his colleagues are taking note. This little bundle of history is part of a mini baby boom hitting the Trump administration's upper echelons. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and his wife recently welcomed their fourth, and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had her second in May. Perhaps there's something in the D.C. water, or maybe it's just a lot of very busy people finding time for... other things. Either way, the White House nursery is apparently getting quite the workout.
