Tournament Experience and Ranking
Cape Verde has played in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. They reached the quarter-finals in their first appearance in 2013 and again in 2023. They nearly qualified for the 2022 World Cup but were eliminated in the group stage.
Currently, Cape Verde is ranked 69th in FIFA. This makes them the second-lowest-ranked African team at this year's World Cup.
World Cup Group and Matches
Cape Verde is in Group H. They will face Spain, the 2010 champions, former champions Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia famously defeated Argentina in the 2022 World Cup. All of Cape Verde's group matches will be played in the US.

The Coach and Key Players
Bubista, whose full name is Pedro Leitao Brito, has been Cape Verde's head coach for six and a half years. He is a former national team player, having played 21 times in the early 2000s. He became head coach in early 2020.
Under Bubista, Cape Verde reached the knockout stages of two AFCONs. His leadership also guided them to the 2026 World Cup, earning him the CAF Coach of the Year 2025 award. Bubista, whose nickname comes from his birthplace Boa Vista, has built a team that is tough to beat.

Forward Dailon Livramento was the top scorer during qualification with four goals. Defender Diney, midfielder Jamiro Monteiro, and winger Willy Semedo each scored two goals. Captain Ryan Mendes, goalkeeper Vozinha, and defender Roberto Lopes are also key players. Many of the team's starters play in countries like Portugal, the Netherlands, and the US.
World Cup Preparations and Expectations
Cape Verde prepared for the World Cup by playing friendlies against Chile and Finland in New Zealand in March. These games were part of the FIFA Series, which helps lower-ranked nations. They lost 4-2 to Chile but won 4-2 on penalties against Finland after a 1-1 draw.
While Cape Verde might be seen as underdogs, they have a reputation for surprising stronger teams. Their strong performance in the African qualifiers shows they are a force to be reckoned with. Coach Bubista sums up their spirit: "We’re a small country, but it’s only small on the map… a small country with a big heart."
