Two brothers in the U.K. have built a robot that solved a complex puzzle cube in record time. Their robot solved a 4x4 puzzle cube in just 45.3 seconds. This broke a Guinness World Record that had stood for over 10 years.
Matthew Pidden and Thomas Pidden developed the robot. They combined their technical skills to create it.
Building the Robot
Matthew focused on the software. He created the algorithms that help the robot analyze the cube. These algorithms figure out the right moves to solve the puzzle. Thomas designed and made many of the robot's parts using 3D printing.

Matthew said he wanted to break the record for his undergraduate project. He enjoyed puzzle cubes and computer science as a child. Combining them felt like a natural and great project.
The robot has a central frame that holds the cube. Four mechanical arms are positioned around the cube. Each arm can precisely rotate different layers of the puzzle. The robot scans the cube and identifies its pattern. Then, it calculates the fastest solution using its algorithms. It quickly rotates the cube until all faces are correctly aligned.
Setting a New Record
During a demonstration, the robot moved quickly and smoothly. Each arm twisted the cube in a carefully planned way. The puzzle was solved in seconds.
The brothers faced some challenges. They had a few failed attempts before succeeding. After improving the robot's speed and performance, they completed the puzzle in 45.3 seconds. This officially set the new world record.
The idea for the robot started as a student project at the University of Bristol. It grew from an academic experiment into an advanced robotic system.
The Pidden brothers' achievement shows what creativity, persistence, and technical knowledge can do. Their robot highlights the growing abilities of robotics. It also shows how technology can solve complex problems quickly and accurately. This success could inspire young engineers and programmers to explore robotics. It might encourage them to develop new technologies that push machine capabilities.
