America is about to get a whole lot more magnetic, and not just in a charming, witty sort of way. USA Rare Earth just broke ground on a $1.2 billion facility in Blacksburg, South Carolina, that’s set to churn out rare earth metals and, crucially, the permanent magnets we can't seem to live without.
This isn't some small-time operation. We're talking 800,000 square feet spread across 124 acres, promising nearly 500 high-paying manufacturing jobs. Because apparently, we’re all finally realizing that waiting for someone else to make our essential tech components isn’t the best long-term strategy.

Once it's up and running in 2028, the plan is to produce 6,400 metric tons of those fancy sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets every year. Plus, another 5,000 metric tons of strip-cast metal and alloy. Let that satisfyingly specific number sink in.

Barbara Humpton, CEO of USA Rare Earth, called this "a pivotal moment," turning "plans into real infrastructure." Which, if you think about it, is what breaking ground is all about. This isn't just about building a factory; it's about rebuilding an entire domestic supply chain, from the ground up.
Blacksburg wasn't chosen by chance. The company sifted through nearly 275 sites nationwide before landing on South Carolina, citing its skilled workforce, available power, and proximity to customers. The U.S. Department of Commerce is even kicking in up to $1.6 billion in support from the CHIPS Act, because apparently that's where we are now. And Blacksburg is getting a quarter-million dollar donation to Spartanburg Community College to help train the future magnet-makers.

Why All the Fuss About Magnets?
Because these aren't your fridge magnets. These are the critical components that power everything from defense systems and aerospace tech to semiconductors, AI, and healthcare. Right now, the U.S. relies heavily on foreign sources for these materials, with China controlling a significant chunk of the global rare earth supply chain. This new plant is a pretty direct response to that.
The Blacksburg facility will team up with USA Rare Earth's existing magnet factory in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Together, they aim to produce 10,000 metric tons of NdFeB magnets annually in the U.S. That's a lot of magnets, and a whole lot less reliance on someone else to power our future.
As Gregory Bowman, chief global policy officer, put it, securing the rare earth supply chain means "every part of it needs to be rebuilt." And Blacksburg is about to add a very large, very important piece to that puzzle.
