Electra is about to drop a cool $850 million into Springfield, Ohio, to build a factory dedicated to their EL9 Ultra Short aircraft. And yes, the name is a hint: this thing is designed to take off and land in a mere 150 feet. Because apparently that's where we are now.
The goal? A staggering 800 of these hybrid-electric birds annually, which will create nearly 2,000 jobs. Marc Allen, Electra's CEO, sounds pretty chuffed, calling it the dawn of a new aviation age. And honestly, when your aircraft can use a parking lot instead of a major airport, he might just be onto something.

The Future of Flight, Very Short
The EL9 Ultra Short isn't just a fancy name; it's a nine-passenger, fixed-wing aircraft that uses hybrid-electric power and something called "blown-lift" technology. Phase one aims for 400 aircraft a year, eventually doubling to 800. These aren't just for commercial flights; Electra envisions them for military logistics and humanitarian aid, too. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, perhaps channeling the Wright Brothers, noted that the Dayton-Springfield area is basically the birthplace of flight, so it's only fitting they're now building the next generation of aircraft. It's a full-circle moment, with fewer biplanes.

Why Ohio?
Electra spent a year scouting over 140 locations across the country. They landed on Springfield for the usual suspects: a ready workforce, existing infrastructure, room to grow, and access to aerospace talent. Plus, the area boasts the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence and SkyVision, an FAA-approved system for testing flights beyond what pilots can see. Because apparently, sometimes you just need to fly blind, safely.
They also have Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Research Laboratory nearby, which Electra sees as crucial for R&D. So, a lot of brains in one place, which is always a good sign.
The EL9 Ultra Short is currently undergoing FAA Part 23 type certification, with the first flight slated for late 2027 or early 2028.
