Turns out, becoming friends isn't just about finding common ground; it's also about your brain doing a surprisingly intricate dance with someone else's. And the moves vary wildly depending on whether you're both still asking for the senior discount.
The Great Brain Synchrony Experiment
Ryssa Moffat, a cognitive scientist at ETH Zurich, decided to get to the bottom of this. She gathered 61 pairs of people – some young (18-35), some older (70-85), and some mixed-age – and had them draw together over six weeks. Why drawing? Because it's creative, collaborative, and you can't exactly chat up a storm while focused on a masterpiece. (Though they did talk in between.)

Start Your News DetoxEach participant wore a fancy, mobile brain sensor, which is basically a cap that listens to your neurons. The goal was to track “inter-brain synchrony” – how much two brains start humming on the same wavelength during an interaction. Previous studies hinted that as people got chummier, their brains would become more similar. Moffat expected the same, a slow, steady increase in brain-to-brain harmony.
But science, as it often does, threw a curveball.
When Brains Go Their Own Way
It turns out, the age gap matters. A lot. For the mixed-age pairs, brain synchrony was highest at the beginning and then decreased over the six weeks. Which is a bit like showing up to a party, instantly clicking with someone, and then slowly drifting apart in terms of brainwaves, even as you feel closer. Go figure.
For same-age pairs, the opposite happened: low synchrony at first, then a gradual climb over the weeks. So, if you're with your peers, your brains take their sweet time getting in sync. But if you're bridging a generation gap, your brains are trying really hard upfront.
One thing was consistent across the board: brains synced up more when people drew together than when they drew alone. Collaboration, it seems, is a brainwave magnet.
Anticipation vs. Just Being There
What’s going on here? Moffat’s research suggests it’s less about "Common Cognitive Processing" – both brains doing the exact same thing at the same time – and more about "Mutual Prediction." It’s your brain learning to anticipate the other person's next move, like a super-subtle mental chess game.
And this is where age differences come into play. Younger and older people have vastly different life experiences, making mutual prediction a bit of a heavy lift at first. Their brains are working overtime to understand each other. Same-age peers, often students in this study, found common ground faster, so their brains didn't need to try as hard initially. They could just… vibe.
In fact, a follow-up study found that in mixed-age pairs, one person's brain often showed stronger internal synchronization (between different parts of their own frontal lobe) while the inter-brain synchrony was low. This usually meant the younger person was adapting, while the older person often took a leadership role. And while same-age pairs drew simultaneously, intergenerational pairs took turns. A division of labor, even at the neuronal level. Because apparently that's where we are now.
This is the first study to track brain activity in younger and older people over several weeks, giving us a peek into the neural mechanics of how strangers slowly, sometimes awkwardly, become friends. It’s a good reminder that even when your brains aren't perfectly in sync, the effort to understand each other is a connection all its own.
