How to Tell Apart the Internet's Most Dramatic Eagle Couple

Struggling to tell Jackie and Shadow apart on the nest? Friends of Big Bear Valley reveals the secret: Jackie is bigger!

Jackie and Shadow are basically the Brad and Angelina of the avian world, only with more feathers and significantly better nest-building skills. These bald eagle parents are internet famous, living their high-stakes, soap-opera lives in Southern California's San Bernardino National Forest, all streamed live for millions. The team at Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) has graciously provided a field guide for those of us who can't tell our raptors apart.

First off, Jackie is the one who clearly doesn't skip leg day. She's about three feet tall to Shadow's two-and-a-half, with a wingspan that's a full six inches wider. FOBBV says Jackie "seems proud of her size," while Shadow is "fine with it." Which, if you think about it, is a very couple thing to say.

Then there's the face. Jackie's head is flatter, giving her a perpetually "fierce" or "stern" look, thanks to a more pronounced brow bone. Shadow, on the other hand, has a less intense brow, making him look a bit more "surprised." So, one looks like they're ready for a fight, the other looks like they just found out about it. Classic.

Their beaks also tell a story. Jackie's upper beak is thicker and sports a curvy, wavy ridge along the bottom edge – perfect for, you know, eagle things. Shadow's beak curves down faster and is flatter on top. These wavy curves are apparently excellent for subduing prey quickly, which is less romantic than it sounds.

And just in case you need more identifiers, Jackie has thicker ankles and a deeper, louder voice. Shadow's shoulders are smaller and more rounded. Basically, Jackie's built like a football linebacker, and Shadow's… well, Shadow's just happy to be there.

The Nesting Drama Continues

Their 2026 nesting season has been a rollercoaster. Ravens, the neighborhood bullies, destroyed two eggs in January. Because apparently, even eagle parents can't catch a break. But Jackie, ever the resilient one, laid two more, which successfully hatched. Chick 1 arrived on April 4th, followed by Chick 2 on April 5th. Millions tuned in, because nothing says prime-time viewing like baby eagles.

Eaglets usually stick around the nest for 10 to 14 weeks, fending off rival birds and bad weather. Lest we forget, a March snowstorm in 2025 claimed one of their three chicks. Only about 70% of eaglets survive after leaving the nest, with cars being a surprisingly common threat when young eagles scavenge for snacks on roadsides. Because apparently that's where we are now.

Jackie and Shadow first paired up in 2018, having successfully raised chicks in 2019 and 2022. Their eggs didn't hatch in 2023 and 2024, which is a reminder that even celebrity eagles have off years. But given that only about 50% of eagle eggs typically hatch, these two are actually doing pretty well. When they fledge, young eagles from Southern California have been spotted as far north as British Columbia and as far south as Baja California. No tracking devices, though, so their gap years remain a mystery. Just like any good reality TV star, they keep us guessing.
