Alexandria, Virginia, is about to make its electric buses even more efficient. The city is installing two new high-speed chargers that will let buses juice up without having to abandon their routes and trek back to the depot. Because apparently, even buses hate making unnecessary trips.
These aren't just any chargers; we're talking 360-kilowatt overhead units. They're designed to keep Alexandria's DASH buses rolling longer, reduce delays, and ensure more electric vehicles are on the road, not stuck in a garage. It's a big step for a city aiming for an entirely zero-emission bus fleet, which, let's be honest, sounds pretty good for everyone's lungs.
Currently, 16 battery-electric buses are zipping around Alexandria, with another 20 on order. Josh Baker, CEO of the Alexandria Transit Company, highlighted that these are the first on-route electric bus chargers in Northern Virginia and the DC area. He's betting on a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable transit system. And did we mention DASH offers free fares? Because it does.

Mayor Alyia Gaskins noted that this investment isn't just about buses; it's about expanding travel options, cutting pollution, and better connecting residents to jobs, homes, and services.
Alexandria isn't alone in this electric pivot. Cities across the U.S. are increasingly embracing zero-emission transit. Calstart, a clean transportation advocacy group, reports that over 8,000 full-size zero-emission buses have been funded, ordered, delivered, or are already in use nationwide as of July 2025. That's a 16% jump from the previous year. So, if you're looking for a quiet commute, the future is looking bright (and electric).
