Picture this: a U.S. Coast Guard crew is out doing Coast Guard things in early June, when they stumble upon a 150-pound loggerhead sea turtle. Not just any turtle, mind you, but one in a serious bind, her right front flipper mangled by an abandoned anchor line.
This endangered turtle, soon to be christened Hope (because of course), was scooped up and whisked away to The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida. Because apparently, even sea turtles have emergency rooms, and this one specializes in flipper-related trauma.
The Lobster Test
Hope's arrival was met with the full VIP treatment: a comprehensive check-up, blood work, and the delicate removal of the offending line. The wound was cleaned, bandaged, and everyone held their breath. "She's been feisty, alert, and full of fight," The Turtle Hospital posted, which is exactly what you want to hear about a creature battling for survival.

Start Your News DetoxBut by June 10th, the news wasn't great. To save her life, vets made the tough call: amputation of that front right flipper. A drastic measure, but one that offered Hope a fighting chance.
Post-op, things got a little dramatic. Hope, bless her heart, refused to eat. Not even lobster tail could tempt her. Clearly, she had standards. With some IV fluids and a specialized menu, however, her appetite made a triumphant return. "Hope is eating again!" the hospital announced on June 17th. "Today’s menu: six squid [and] two mackerel." A true gourmand, that one.
Her healing flipper stump was treated with a "medical honey wrap"—because honey isn't just for your tea; its high sugar content is apparently a bacterial bouncer.
By July 3rd, Hope was ready for her "spa day," which involved a bandage change and a fair bit of feisty wiggling. The staff, far from annoyed, took it as a sign of her burgeoning strength. And after a challenging month, Hope continues to improve, eating like a champion and healing daily. All thanks to a dedicated team and, apparently, a turtle's discerning taste for seafood. Which, if you think about it, is both impressive and slightly terrifying.
