LG's new UltraGear evo GM9 monitor combines a 5K screen with Hyper Mini LED technology. This aims to make gaming visuals brighter, sharper, and faster.
As gaming hardware gets more powerful, monitor makers are moving beyond 4K. They are also using more advanced display tech. LG's latest effort is the 27-inch UltraGear evo GM9. It features a 5K panel and LG's new 'Hyper Mini LED' backlighting.
Hyper Mini LED for Better Gaming
The GM9 was first shown at CES 2026. It has a resolution of 5,120 x 2,880 and a fast refresh rate up to 330 Hz. This makes it good for both detailed gaming and competitive speed. LG wants to balance high resolution and speed. It also aims to improve HDR and reduce issues sometimes seen in Mini LED displays.

Start Your News DetoxLG's new Hyper Mini LED design includes some improvements. It uses 2,304 local dimming zones. The gap between the panel and backlight is smaller. This helps make light more precise and reduces "blooming." Blooming is a halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds.
LG says the panel meets VESA DisplayHDR 1000 standards. It has a peak brightness of 1,250 nits. It also has TÜV Rheinland anti-blooming certification. The goal is to make Mini LEDs closer to OLED contrast. At the same time, it keeps the brightness benefits of backlit LCD panels.
LG also uses AI for image improvements. These include 5K AI Upscaling, AI Scene Optimization, and AI audio tuning. The monitor has a Dual Mode system. You can switch between 5K at 165 Hz for cinematic gaming. Or, you can use QHD at 330 Hz for competitive play. It also has a 1-ms response time. It supports Nvidia G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium.
The GM9 tries to combine two types of monitors. It offers both high-detail immersion and ultra-fast e-sports performance.
Connectivity and Price

LG also sees the Ultragear evo GM9 as a display for creators. It is good for professional tasks needing high brightness, strong HDR, and many pixels.
It has DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20), two HDMI ports, and USB-C with 90-W power delivery. This allows it to work with high-bandwidth gaming setups. It also works with a single-cable laptop setup.
The GM9 is a mix of a flagship gaming monitor, a creator display, and a high-end HDR system. Its main feature is flexibility. It offers ultra-high resolution, fast refresh rates, and advanced backlighting in one package. This means you don't have to choose one over the other.
The UltraGear evo GM9 launched globally in April. It costs $1,199. This puts it in the premium gaming monitor market. If LG’s Hyper Mini LED tech works as promised, it could be a good alternative to OLED. This is especially true for gamers who want strong HDR without the halo effect sometimes seen with Mini LED panels.
